The artwork series “Yemaya: Mother of All”, by Cary Michael is a continuation of the “Sethemba: Man of Tomorrow” artwork series that introduces a heroine into the storyline as Sethemba’s supporting cast and one of his principal love interests. Each masterpiece within this series features the fictional superhero that Cary Michael created named “Yemaya” (Yoruba word meaning “mother of all”) takes the form of a dragonfly who represents fertility and serves as the Queen of Nature and Goddess of Energy ruling over the seas, rivers and lakes. Her name, a shortened version of “Yey Omo Eja”, means “Mother Whose Children are the Fish” to reflect the fact that her children are so numerous that they are uncountable, and she has been summoned to protect her “children” (humankind) by promoting healing and wholeness – from physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of human experience.  As the dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability and self-realization, this series documents Yemaya’s evolution from a Nymph (immature form of an insect) to being metamorphosed into a beautiful and mystical adult dragonfly, bearing attributes such as superhuman physical strength and magical power to control energy and water, which is indicative by the change in her eye and hair color. Like superhero comics and movies, the artwork in this series progresses to include slight variances in style and drastic portrayals of Yemaya’s appearance, while the essence of Yemaya and her story remains stagnant. As this is an ongoing series, it is my “hope” that viewers of these works can depict Yemaya as a role model figure, view themselves in her shoes, and acquire a deep sense of healing and wholeness, while relating to her continued quest to promote social change and understand the deeper meaning of life.

L.I.L.Y. – Lean into Life’s Yearning

    Mixed Media: Glitter and Acrylic

     on Canvas

    24 x 48

    2022

Before there was the mystical dragonfly, there was Yemaya in tadpole form. She has a short, oval body with a broad tail, and all she knows is water. She commonly resorts to chillin’ under her favorite lily pad (which provides her peace, purity and power to control her thoughts) and often wonders what life would be outside of aquatics.

One sweet day, Yemaya feels an uncontrollable jolt throughout her entire body. She swims for cover under her favorite lily pad, but suddenly transforms into a Nymph (an immature form of a dragonfly), as a result of her persistent prayers for power!

Inner Strength

    Leaf and Acrylic on Canvas

    48 x 48

    2019

Yemaya begins her quest as a Nymph, an immature form of  a dragonfly living in fresh water. She imagines herself as a supernatural presence, but doesn’t have the wings nor the capacity to see beyond the limitations of her current being. As a result of her circumstances, she tends to make informed choices and resorts to living a mundane life on a moment-to-moment basis. Fed up with this philosophy, she finally decides to elevate her thinking and move beyond the self-created illusions that once limited her growth and ability to change. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and substantiates her inner strength until she emerges into a beautiful and graceful dragonfly!

S.H.E. Surfacing

Her Emergence

Mixed Media: Clear Resin, Glitter, Swarovski Crystals, and

    Acrylic Paint on Canvas

    48 x 60

    2019

Upon substantiating her inner strength, Yemaya realizes that there has been a change in her physical, mental, and emotional aptitude. Her wings, legs and torso begin to shimmer, and she notices that the iridescence alters colors depending on which angle the light falls on her skin. This magical property of iridescence causes her to unmask her real self and remove the doubts she once casted upon her own sense of identity. She begins to wonder… with such a phenomenal change in her demeanor, there HAS to be a deeper implication of life. Moving with elegance and grace, she then scurries flight across the water, and surfaces her emergence beyond the ocean and into the air.

    36 x 48

    2022

Launching into her true purpose, Yemaya uses her wings in tandem to guide her own path. She’s flutters towards the light of the moon, which provides her the radiance to elevate herself and the lives of others. She begins her quest by simply representing feminism, and is on a mission to push for all genders to have equal rights and opportunities. With a fierce gaze in her eyes and burgundy hair color change (indicative of her intense passion for this subject matter), she challenges those whom she encounters to respect diverse women’s experiences, identities, knowledge and strengths. She is on a journey to empower ALL women to realize their full rights and potential!

H.E.A.L. – Healing Emotionally

Abused Lives

Mixed Media: Black & White Collage Prints, Acrylic Paint on Canvas with Photo Manipulation

 30 x 40

 2021

Yemaya encounters Nefertiti, who wears a three-tiered crown (equivalent to the building design of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture) with a shadow and blurred lines superimposed over her body. She gives Yemaya insight into a post-pandemic world, that includes peace and harmony, but also hints to future occurrences of social injustice, police brutality and domestic violence. While Yamaya appreciates this awareness, she considers Nefertiti’s guidance “blurred lines” since an effective resolution to our nation’s problems does not seem to exist. Fueled by the uncertainties of this adaptive new way of life, Yemaya flashes forward into the future to begin her quest for healing and the restoration of emotionally abused lives! ywhere!

K.I.N.G. (Kingship Includes

No Gender)

Mixed Media: Fabric, Glitter, and Acrylic Paint on Canvas

      48 x 60

      2020

This artwork shows a depiction of American singer/actress Beyoncé’s accompanied by Yemaya. It is inspired by Beyoncé's 2020 “Black is King” visual album, and serves to explore the cultural juxtaposition between men as kings and women also serving as kings in their daily lives. Many strong women (particularly, strong Black women) have to bear a crown and wear their “superwoman” armor everyday and be strong, self-sacrificing, and free of emotion to cope with the stress of race and gender-based discrimination some tend to experience in their daily lives.

Therefore, regardless of gender, it can be believed that we all contain both masculine and feminine energies – By scientific law, men typically tend to have more masculine energy and less of feminine energy and women, usually have more feminine energy than masculine. However, this can be totally reversed as well, and your leading energy reflects your inner nature and values.

The feminine energy is flowing and dynamic. It’s moves can’t be predicted or always explained with the rational mind. It is unrestricted by the social norms because this type of energy doesn’t follow any rules other than guidance coming from thy heart. The masculine energy is stable and more predictable. Its strengths are willpower, clarity, and focus. The masculine energy likes to create structures and rules, so it knows how to apply the logic correctly.

Consequently, and based on the above understanding, ALL humans are energetic beings consisting of both masculine and feminine energy. The key is tapping into both energies to find YOUR perfect blend. When both energies are accessible and strong, they help to balance each other out and keep us in harmony.

What is YOUR leading energy?
